Widow's Curse

In London dwelt a merchant man who left unto his sonEn Londres vivía un comerciante que dejó a su hijo

A thousand pounds in land each year to spend when he was goneMil libras en tierras cada año para gastar cuando él se fuera

No sooner was his father dead and buried in his graveApenas su padre murió y fue enterrado en su tumba

Than this his wild and wanton son his mind to lewdness gaveEste hijo salvaje y lujurioso se entregó a la lascivia

Within the seas of fleshly love, his heart was drowned so deepEn los mares del amor carnal, su corazón estaba tan sumergido

At night he could not quietly without strange women sleepQue por la noche no podía dormir sin extrañas mujeres

So he kept women secretly to feed his heart's desireAsí que mantenía mujeres en secreto para alimentar su deseo

And he dressed them all as gallant boys in pages' trim attireY las vestía a todas como gallardos muchachos con atuendos de pajes

But then one day upon the round he spied a lovely damePero un día, en sus andanzas, vio a una encantadora dama

Who was the widow's daughter dear of good report and fameQue era la querida hija de la viuda, de buena reputación y fama

He beauty like the purple rose so glittered in his eyeSu belleza como la rosa púrpura brillaba en sus ojos

That ravished by the same he sought her secret companyTan arrebatado por ella, buscó su compañía secreta

Then like a lustful lecher he found such convenient timeEntonces, como un lujurioso, encontró un momento conveniente

That he enforced her to drink 'till she was drunk with wineY la obligó a beber hasta embriagarla con vino

And being over-charged with wine, a maiden's head is weakY al estar sobrecargada de vino, la cabeza de una doncella es débil

He ravished her and when that she no reluctance makeLa violó y al no encontrar resistencia alguna

And mark I pray what then befell unto this modest dameY observa, te ruego, lo que le sucedió a esta dama modesta

When she recovered her lost sense and found of her defameCuando recuperó el sentido y descubrió su infamia

He womb began to swell; in time the babe received lifeSu vientre comenzó a hincharse; con el tiempo, el bebé recibió vida

Though she was neither widow nor dame nor yet a married wifeAunque ella no era viuda ni dama ni esposa casada

Said she: "The babe within my womb shall never yet be born.Dijo: 'El bebé dentro de mi vientre nunca nacerá

Not called a bastard by such wives that hold my fate in scorn"No será llamado bastardo por esas esposas que desprecian mi destino'

"For I a strumpet in disgrace though one against my will'Porque soy una prostituta en desgracia, aunque en contra de mi voluntad

Before that I would shame my friends my own life's blood I'll spillAntes de avergonzar a mis amigos, derramaré mi propia sangre

And as with wine I was deceived and made a victicious dameY así como con vino fui engañada y convertida en una mujer viciosa

So I will wash away with wine my scarlet spots of shame"Así lavaré con vino mis manchas escarlatas de vergüenza'

Then drinking down hot burning wine she yielded up her breathEntonces, bebiendo vino caliente y ardiente, entregó su último aliento

By which the same the unborn babe was scalded unto deathCon lo cual el bebé no nacido fue escaldado hasta la muerte

Upon her knees her her mother fell; to heaven did cry and callDe rodillas, su madre cayó; al cielo clamó y llamó

"If ever widow's curse," quoth she, "on mortal man did fall,'Si alguna vez la maldición de una viuda', dijo ella, 'cayó sobre un hombre mortal

Then say amen to mine, oh Lord, that he may never thriveEntonces, amén a la mía, oh Señor, que él nunca prospere

Who was the cause of this sad fate but not rot away alive"Quien fue la causa de esta triste suerte pero no se pudra vivo'

His nails from out his fingers fell his eyes from out his headSus uñas cayeron de sus dedos, sus ojos de su cabeza

His toes they rotted from his feet before that he was deadSus dedos de los pies se pudrieron antes de que estuviera muerto

His tongue that had false sworn so oft to compass his desireSu lengua, que tantas veces había jurado falsamente para lograr su deseo

Within his mouth did swell and burn like coals of sparking fireDentro de su boca se hinchó y ardió como brasas de fuego chispeante

And thus in torment for his sins the wicked villain diedY así, en tormento por sus pecados, murió el malvado villano

Whose hateful carcass after death could not in earth abideCuyo odioso cadáver después de la muerte no pudo permanecer en la tierra

But in the maws of carrion crows the ravens made their tombSino que en las fauces de los cuervos carroñeros hicieron su tumba

And then in hell he screamed and writhed in everlasting doom!Y luego en el infierno gritó y se retorció en un tormento eterno!
