Za kralja Zvonimira bijaše sva zemlja vesela
jer bijaše puna svakoga dobra,
a gradovi bijahu puni srebra i zlata.
Ubogi se jakih ne bojahu,
niti se sluge bojahu da im gospodar uèini nepravdu,
jer kralj svih branjaše.
Ali u to se vrijeme zgodi da car bizantski,
s voljom svetoga oca pape pošalje pisma i
poslanike moleæi pomoæ kralja Zvonimira,
meðu kraljevima kršæanskim kralja poštovanoga.
Kada dobri i sveti kralj Zvonimir primi pisma
od pape i cara, zapovjedi po cijelom kraljevstvu svome,
neka se vitezovi i baruni sakupe
kod pet crkava na kninskom Kosovu polju.
I kada doðe reèeni dan, Zvonimir im proèita molbu
neka odluèe da li æe, zajedno s drugom gospodom kršæanskom,
iz drugih zemalja u koje su poslana takva pisma,
a s pomoæu Božjom poæi osloboditi mjesta
na kojima je sin Božji na križu muku trpio i krv prolio,
gdje je predao duh Ocu i gdje je u grob
bilo položeno preslavno tijelo njegovo.
Al èuvši to »Bogom prokleti i nevirni Hrvati«
ne daše listove doèitati, veæ poèeše krièati i vikati
na svetoga kralja da on hoæe njih odvesti iz domova njihovih,
od žena i djece njihove, te s carem otimati mjesta
gdje je Krist propet i gdje je grob njegov.
I nevirni Hrvati uzeše zlu misao i meðu sobom
zlo vijeæe uèiniše
- "Bolje da jedan umre, nere toliki puk da pogine".
I kao psi na vuke lajuæi kada idu, tako oni krenu
na dobroga kralja s bukom i oružjem. Poèeše sjeæi
tijelo svoga kralja i gospodina i krv njegovu prolijevati.
I kralj, ležeæi u krvi, izranjen, u velikim bolovima,
prokle »nevirne Hrvate« i ostatak njih Bogom
i svecima njegovim, sobom i nedostojnom smræu svojom,
da nikada više ne imali gospodina od svoje krvi i jezika,
nego vazda tuðu jeziku podložni bili.
A slušavši o tome što se zbilo u kraljevstvu hrvatskom
kralj ugarski, imenom Bela prvi, poðe s vojskom golemom
i uzme kraljevstvo hrvatsko.
I imahu Hrvati kralja ugarskog za gospodara,
jer svoga bijahu ubili. A bi ubijen kralj Zvonimir
na tisuæu i osamdeset ljeta od roðenja Isusa Krista.
